Meaning of life

This happened on an abandoned typewriter I picked up off the street, now sitting in our classroom:



Next week is our last full week of classes.
Maybe we all learned something after all.

    And I always thought that the answer to the question, "What is meaning of life?" was 42.

    (I love teaching, too.)

    Dear Kate,

    I wish the solution was, in fact, 42--but my sophomores have yet to explore that genre.

    At least most of them.

    I have a few oddballs I love, and who will save us, if salvation is possible. I have the piece of paper hanging on the bulletin board.

    I bet before the year's out, I'll get an equation where x=42.

    And keep sending the poems. I love Mary Oliver. Her poem "Oxygen" intermittently sits on the bulletin board.

    Really? You haven't had any students suggest 42? That was one of my favorite books at that age.

    One of the last books I taught seniors had 42 as the answer to the universe.
