Coming from a scientist makes all the difference. (I have several quotes on the wall--part of your response may end up near Feynman's, if that's OK with you....)doylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12901661320505882735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4956989639073843954.post-23723171784943314562013-06-18T15:59:10.390-04:002013-06-18T15:59:10.390-04:00I can't agree with you more, so much science h...I can't agree with you more, so much science happens observing the natural world, or pondering what you saw in nature, often sitting with your feet up enjoying a frosty beverage. I know this because I am a scientist, not a science teacher, though I have a very strong desire to explain what science is, like actually is, not what we are taught it is... such as writing down observations of fireflies in a jar for no apparent reason. The only reason a scientist would put fireflies in a jar and record what they did, is if s/he had already spent unending hours observing them in nature and had a hypothesis that s/he wanted to test and the "in-jar" observation was a reasonable way to do that.

I'm not sure how to really teach that what scientist really do is look at stuff an wonder... and then try to figure out an explanation for what they see and that that is exactly the same thing that everyone does all the time, every minute of everyday.

By the way I adore your blog and read it often, until now I've only been a lurker, but this one was too good not to chime in on! Thanks so much for your thoughts!Azurenoreply@blogger.com
